XAVMILAN 2024: A Night of Nostalgia and Celebration at the SXUK Alumni Reunion

On Sunday, February 11, 2024, the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata Campus played host to the 2nd Annual Reunion and Fellowship Dinner of the St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association—XAVMILAN 2024. The event, commencing at 6 pm, brought together a tapestry of memories, laughter, and shared experiences.

The event was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, SXUK and President, SXUKAA. Rev. Fr. Raj extended a heartfelt welcome to the alumni and alumnae, setting the tone for an evening filled with camaraderie. He was also felicitated by Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary, SXUKAA, on behalf of all the alumni/ae. The gathering was graced by the distinguished presence of Dr. S. Ignacimuthu, S.J., a renowned Bio-scientist and the recipient of PhD (Honoris Causa) at the 5th Convocation Ceremony of SXUK. Adding to the intellectual fervor of the occasion were Eminent Economist Dr. Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi and Eminent Lawyer Dr. Prabhakaran Ramachandran.

The highlight of the evening, however, was not just the esteemed guests but also the cultural extravaganza that unfolded. Adhiraj Bajaj, a popular singer, set the musical stage ablaze with a captivating performance. The beats continued with DJ Azfar Aziz taking over for a lively DJ Night, ensuring that the celebration resonated through the campus. The event was also covered by 91.9 Friends FM.

The reunion, more than just an event, served as a poignant reminder of the cherished days spent by the alumni/ae within the hallowed halls of the university. As laughter echoed and memories were revisited, XAVMILAN 2024 became a testament to the enduring bonds forged during the formative years at St. Xavier's University Kolkata.

5th Convocation Ceremony of SXUK

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) organised the fifth Convocation ceremony on February 10, 2024 at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, New Town. The ceremony was presided over by Hon'ble Chancellor Rev. Dr. James Arjen Tete, S.J. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for 'Sustainable Energy for All' was the Chief Guest and he delivered the Convocation address.

In this convocation, SXUK conferred the Doctor of Science (D.Sc, Honoris Causa) on Rev. Dr. S. Ignacimuthu, S.J., a noted Bio-scientist and the Doctor of Law (LL.D, Honoris Causa) on Mr. R N Jhunjhunwala, a renowned barrister respectively. All the dignitaries were felicitated with memento by Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary – SXUKAA on behalf of all the Alumni Members.

A total of 889 Ph.D., postgraduate and undergraduate students were awarded their degree completion certificates in this ceremony.

Ms. Priyadarshini Laishram, a research scholar was awarded the Ph. D degree in Commerce. She is also the first Ph.D recipient from SXUK.

Magis 2024 award to Father Felix Raj

Father John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) was honoured with the JHEASA Magis 2024 award on January 27, 2024 at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata at the National Jesuit Higher Education conference.

Fr. Raj received this award in appreciation of his commitment, dedication and hard work in advancing the mission of higher education in South Asia through his pioneering and path breaking initiatives making a difference in society.

Fr. Stanislaus D’Souza, President of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia presented the Magis medal to Fr. Felix Raj while Fr. Joseph Christie from Rome handed over the plaque. Fr. Joe Arun presented the citation and Fr. Dominic Savio honoured him with a special shawl.

“An award is a public recognition, appreciation of the past achievements one has made and it is also an invitation to the future task ahead. Yes, I am humbled and I have a long way to go,” said Fr. Felix Raj after receiving the Magis award.

The award is established from this year and Fr. Felix Raj is the first recipient. The award coincides his completion of 50 years as a Jesuit. He began his Jesuit training in Patna from January 2, 1974. There was a standing ovation from the audience comprising of Principals of Jesuit colleges, Vice-Chancellors, professors and alumni members.

While addressing on ‘Discernment, Networking and Collaboration’, the theme of the conference, Fr. Raj said, “It is important to collaborate and network with other institutions for growth or else we have to stand alone. We work to network and network to work.” He also praised the role of St. Xavier’s College alumni members for their generous contributions in establishing the SXUK.

Golden Jubilee celebration of Father Felix Raj and his Companions

The Golden Jubilee of Father Felix Raj, S.J. as a Jesuit, was celebrated in the St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) on January 4, 2024.

Father Felix Raj celebrates his 50 years of being a Jesuit in Kolkata this year. He began his Jesuit training in Patna from January 2, 1974. To make the celebration more meaningful, Father Raj had invited all his 1974 Novitiate companions to SXUK.

In his address at the function, he said, "Nine of us came together for two days, from January 2nd to 4th and had very fruitful and enriching sharing sessions, reliving our rich experience in the early years of our formation and rejuvenating ourselves. We gratefully remembered all, Jesuits and others who journeyed with us in these 50 golden years."

On January 4 evening, the St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) oraganised a programme in which the alumni members felicitated all the nine Jubilarians.

Father Raj narrated his journey with a sense of deep gratitude to all those who were present as the audience. He said, "Jesus Christ had an inner circle of 12 apostles and hundreds of disciples at the peripheral level. Among the apostles, there were a few like Peter who denied Jesus thrice, like Thomas who doubted his resurrection and Judas who betrayed him."

He further said, "Still Peter was chosen as the first Pope of the Church and Thomas was sent all the way to India. Inspite of shortcomings, weaknesses and sinful nature of human beings, God chooses the weak and makes them strong. And that is what God has done with me and with my companions." Father also shared some of the anecdotes of his early life.

Father's nephew, Naveen David, his wife Priya David and their 6 year old daughter, Zarah David had come all the way from Tamil Nadu for the celebrations.

To make the celebration memorable, students staged a beautiful cultural show. The celebrations ended with a dinner hosted by the alumni association. Thanks to Vatsal Chirimar, Honorary Secretary and his team of council members for their efficient organisation of the programme.

Annual Christmas Get-Together

St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) organised a Christmas get-together for academicians and its well-wishers on December 20, 2023 at the university campus. Around 60 Principals of different schools and colleges of Kolkata and Vice-Chancellors of universities attended the programme.

At the beginning, Rev. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Vice-Chancellor, SXUK & President, SXUKAA presented a Christmas message to all participants. The gathering had an academic side to it where participants discussed current issues of the mobility of students from West Bengal to other cities, states and abroad.

The discussion was initiated by the inputs of Ms. Jessica Gomes Surana, Principal, Loreto Day School, Elliot Road, followed by Dr. Deepali Singhee, Principal, J.D. Birla Institute and Prof. Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor, Adamas University.

The team of students and faculty members of XUCAS presented heart-touching carols and dances depicting the Christmas message. Their performance was highly appreciated. All the participants led by Father Raj then joined together and cut the Christmas cake. The entire programme took place in the SXUK Quadrangle, which was beautifully adorned.

On December 22, 2023, SXUKAA organised another Christmas Gathering, like every year, for the Faculty, Staff and Alumni of SXUK.

X-PLORE 1.0

St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) organized Xplore 1.0, a fellowship tour to Thailand from September 28 to October 1, 2023. The primary purpose of the trip was to explore possibilities for future collaboration and exchange programs in various academic disciplines between St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, and Assumption University in Bangkok. The tour was attended by a delegation from St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, including esteemed University Fathers and dedicated Alumni, creating a close-knit and diverse assembly that represented the rich tapestry of our alumni community.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in a series of activities, including campus tours, meetings with faculty and administrative staff members, and discussions on the modalities of future collaborations in terms of exchange programs, research initiatives, and other academic collaborations etc. The outcomes of these interactions were highly positive and fruitful.

Xplore 1.0 was an opportunity for the participants to unwind, connect, and explore the vibrant culture and scenery of Thailand. The trip was a resounding success in achieving its primary objective of creating a strong sense of unity and camaraderie among the participants. The shared experiences and memories formed during the trip will undoubtedly strengthen the bonds within the alumni association.

Philanthropy Day Celebrations 2023

St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) organised the Philanthropy Day Celebrations on August 25th & 26th, 2023 in the SXUK Campus.

On August 25th, a Blood Donation Camp was organised wherein around 200 people including the faculty, staff, students and alumni of SXUK donated blood. The blood was collected by the Blood Bank of Bidhannagar Sub Divisional Hospital and the Kothari Medical Centre Blood Bank.

On August 26th, an eye check-up camp was organised for the benefit of people of Kanthalberia and Kulberia (villages situated in the neighbourhood of the University campus). Around 200 people took advantage of the camp. The association will provide spectacles to 120 people and the sponsor the cataract surgery of 30 patients who were identified in the camp.

In the evening of August 26th, SXUKAA organised a felicitation program wherein Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice Chancellor, SXUK & President, SXUKAA was felicitated. A short video on the life of Rev. Fr. Felix Raj was also shown to supplement the cultural program. “Rev. Fr. Felix Raj is someone who has dedicated his life for the service of society. Recommitting ourselves to the cause of the society as ‘men and women for others’ is perhaps the best gift that we can give father”, said Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary of SXUKAA. Rev. Fr. Felix Raj spoke about how he was deeply inspired by the simplicity and humility of St. Teresa of Calcutta, with whom he shares his birthday with. He thanked the Alumni for their generosity and their attachment with their alma mater.

SXUKAA organises the Philanthropy Day Celebrations every year coinciding with the birthday of their President, Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ. It is a day on which the members of the association recommit themselves to the cause of the society apart from carrying out several philanthropic activities.

Xav-Milan – 1st Annual Reunion of SXUKAA

St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) hosted the first-ever Alumni Reunion (Xav-Milan) on February 11, 2023. The campus was abuzz with a festive atmosphere as it witnessed an overwhelming response from the alumni members from the batch of 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 of the university who came together to reminisce about their time spent at this prestigious institution.

The event began with Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SXUK and President, SXUKAA, welcoming the alumni members with a nostalgic note of homecoming. The 1st Chancellor of the University, Rev. Fr. Jeyaraj Veluswamy, S.J., and Rev. Fr. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Founder Vice-Chancellor, SXUK were felicitated by SXUKAA on the occasion. Emotions ran high as old friends met after a long time at the university campus and faculty members also reunited with their mentees.

Proceedings took a musical turn with The Loko Express, a popular band in Kolkata, setting the mood by performing a variety of hits from different genres, getting the crowd grooving and singing along to the tunes. The band performance by a DJ show. Another highlight of the evening was the sumptuous dinner. The night ended with revisiting old memories and a promise to rekindle it every year.

4th Convocation Ceremony of SXUK

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata organized its 4th Convocation Ceremony on 6th February 2023 at the University Campus. The occasion was graced by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee, as the Chief Guest, H.E. Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose, Governor of West Bengal as the Guest of Honour, and Mr. Bratya Basu, Minister of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal. All the dignitaries were felicitated with memento by Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary – SXUKAA on behalf of all the Alumni Members.

On this occasion, Smt. Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal was conferred upon the prestigious Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) by Rev. Fr. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of SXUK for her contribution towards the development of education in West Bengal. With the conferment of her degree, Smt. Mamata Banerjee also became an Honorary Member of SXUKAA. Mr. Vatsal Chirimar handed over the Honorary Membership Card of SXUKAA to Smt. Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal.

770 students received their degrees on this day and were inducted as alumni members of SXUKAA. With this, the SXUKAA family is presently having more than 2,000 Life Members.

Annual Sports Day 2023

St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata organized its Annual Sports Day on 28th January, 2023. The was graced by the presence of Shri Arun Lal, Former Indian Cricketer as the Chief Guest for the event and Shri Ajit Tete, DIG – Border Security Force as the Guest of Honour. Like every year, SXUKAA contingent comprising of Alumni Members participated in the Sports Day Parade led by Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary – SXUKAA. A special 100 mts race was also organized for the Alumni Members..

CHRISTMAS GATHERING AT SXUK

SXUKAA organized a Christmas get-together for all Faculty and Staff members on December 20, 2022. Prof. Suranjan Das, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, and Dr. N.K. Chakrabarti, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of WBNUJS (West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences) were present for the gathering and shared their Christmas messages respectively.

Fr. Felix Raj, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, welcomed the gathering and delivered his Christmas message to all. Some Faculty and staff members sang some melodious Christmas carols. The program was followed by High tea.

Diwali Milan 2022

The festival is over, still the festive spirit is on! The festival of light was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony as St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) celebrated the 'Diwali Milan 2022' in the University campus on October 29, 2022 with a bunch of young Xaverian graduates.

All the Jesuit Fathers of the SXUK Jesuit community attended the celebration. The programme began with Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor and President, SXUKAA leading everyone in prayer and lighting the ceremonial lamp. Fr. Raj also conveyed the Deepawali greetings to all alumni members. He wished that every Xaverian should spread the light of knowledge across their surroundings for a better tomorrow.

It was an occasion for the members to meet and greet each other and spend some time together during the festive season at their alma mater. A musical program was also put up by some alumni/ae on the occasion.

NJAAI Milan 2022 at Darjeeling

The North Zone Congress of the Federation of Jesuit Alumni Associations of India (JAAI) was held in St. Joseph's School North Point, Darjeeling on the 2nd & 3rd September 2022. It was attended by delegates from the various Jesuit Alumni Associations from five Jesuit provinces namely- Kolkata, Darjeeling, Patna, Kohima, and Delhi.

The SXUK Alumni Association delegation was led by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, President, SXUKAA & Province Coordinator of Alumni, Kolkata Province. The delegation comprised Mr. Prionkur Bose, Vice President, Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Hony. Secretary, Mr. Siddharth Kumar Tripathi, Hony. Treasurer, and Mr. Rohit Raj Ghosh, GB Member, SXUKAA. Shri P. S. Goley, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim was the Chief Guest.

The North Zone Council of JAAI was reconstituted in the Congress. Mr. Vatsal Chirimar of SXUKAA was appointed the Treasurer of the North Zone Council of JAAI.

Philanthropy Day Celebrations & Release of “Tides-Story Bank”

St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) celebrated the birthday of its President Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, as ‘Philanthropy Day’ in the University Campus on Friday, 26th August, 2022. ‘Philanthropy Day’ is a day on which the Alumni recommits itself to the cause of philanthropy and social welfare every year.

Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj’s book “Tides-Story Bank” was released on this day. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Xaverian Shri Jawhar Sircar, Hon’ble Member of Parliament – Rajya Sabha. ‘Tides-Story Bank’ is a collection of 75 short stories. It is father’s second book of short stories after “Waves-Story Bank” which was released on 3rd December, 2020. The book has been published by St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association. The foreword to the book has been written by Shri Shashi Tharoor, Hon’ble Member of Parliament – Lok Sabha.

Shri Jawhar Sircar addressed a session for the Faculty Members of the University after which the Alumni Association organized the Philanthropy Day celebrations and the Book Launch. Rev. Fr. President handed over hearing aids to beneficiaries belonging to the economically weaker section of society. A video presentation showing some prized moments of Rev. Fr. President’s life was also shown by the Alumni Association.

Ignatius Cup Football Tournament

As part of the Ignatian Year Celebrations of SXUK, a football tournament was organised among the students, Faculty Members, Non-Teaching Staff Members and Alumni Members in a league cum knockout format on 30th July, 2022. The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. Sonajharia Minz, Vice-Chancellor, SKM University, and Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor, SXUK. The tournament was named as Ignatius Cup and was sponsored by SXUKAA. Alumni team won the first edition of the Ignatius Cup.

World Environment Day Celebrations

St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association celebrated World Environment Day on the University campus on Friday, 3rd June 2022. On this occasion, 500 saplings were distributed to faculty members and the 6 neighbouring villages adopted by the University.

On the occasion, Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, Vice-Chancellor, the University & President of St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association declared the University's commitment to becoming a plastic-free campus. He handed over saplings to representatives of the six neighbouring villages adopted by the University and all the staff members. All the stakeholders of the University took an Environment Protection Pledge led by the Hony. Secretary of the Alumni Association, Mr. Vatsal Chirimar.

The Jesuits have framed the Universal Apostolic Preferences for 2019-2029, one of which is "To Collaborate in the Care for our Common Home." A Sit & Draw Competition was also organized on the occasion with children from Kalthelberia, Kulberia, Bonita, Hathishaka, Jeerangancha, and Dharamtalla-Panchuria villages on the theme "Caring for our Common Home." The program ended with a high tea.

Inauguration of Friday Fellowship Gathering

With the intention of promoting fellowship within the Xaverian Alumni network, the tradition of Friday Fellowship was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, St. Xavier’s University Kolkata and Hon’ble President, St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association on Friday, 22nd April, 2022.

Members of SXUKAA have decided to meet informally at the University campus every Friday evening from 5:30pm – 8pm to remain connected to their alma mater, interact with each other and increase fellowship. The inauguration was done with a symbolic cake-cutting in the presence of Rev. Fr. President, the Registrar, SXUK, the Deans, the Honorary Secretaries of SXUKAA and SXCCAA and Alumni Members.

Annual Sports Day

SXUKAA contingent comprising of the alumni members was part of the Sports Day Parade of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. The Sports Day was held on 2nd April, 2022.

3rd Convocation Ceremony of SXUK

St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) successfully organized the third Convocation programme on March 5, 2022 (Saturday) in the University premises adhering to all protocols of COVID-19 pandemic. A total number of 627 students received their degree completion certificates both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in this Convocation programme. 34 students were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals according to their ranks.

On this grand occasion, eminent industrialist and Xaverian, Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group was conferred upon the prestigious first Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) by Rev. Fr. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of SXUK.

A delegation representing St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) attended the 5th National Governing Council Meeting of the Federation of Jesuit Alumni Association of India (JAAI) held at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata on 26th & 27th March, 2022.

The delegation was led by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, President, SXUKAA.
A meeting of all the Alumni Associations of the Kolkata Province was also held on 26th March, 2022. The Hony. Secretary of SXUKAA, Mr. Vatsal Chirimar presented a report on activities of SXUKAA which was appreciated by all.

John Felix Raj, SJ, the Vice-Chancellor of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata and President of St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association gave the ‘Christmas Message’ on this day in the presence of the Jesuit Community, Staff, Faculty Members and Alumni of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata.

Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj spoke about the commitment of the Jesuit community towards education. Father also spoke about the influence of Jesus on Tagore’s life and how Tagore had mentioned about Jesus in two of his poems. Rev. Fr. Felix Raj also recited some lines from the poems. He blessed the gathering and wished everyone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The souvenir items launched includes Coffee Mugs, Lapel Pins, Digital Table Clocks, Sipper Bottles, Key Chains, Fridge Magnets, Mobile Pop Sockets, Caps and T-Shirts. The first set of Memorabilia items were handed over to Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, by the Honorary Secretary of SXUKAA, Mr. VatsalChirimar. A set of the Memorabilia was also gifted to each of the Jesuit Fathers of the SXUK Jesuit Community. The souvenir items will be available for sale from the Alumni Office as well as the website of SXUKAA. The sale proceeds will be used for various social and charitable activities carried out by SXUKAA throughout the year.

SXUKAA shared the joy of the festive season with some children of the neighbouring villages who had been invited for the Christmas Gathering. A total of 183 people received their 2nd dose of Covishield Vaccine on the day. This camp was organised primarily to administer the 2nd dose of the vaccine to the 248 beneficiaries who had taken their first jab on August 29, 2021.

The medical team for this vaccination drive was from the Renaissance Hospital, Kolkata.

2nd Dose COVID Vaccination Camp at SXUK

The necessary medical support for the camp was provided by the District Administration of North 24 Parganas and Salt Lake Sub-Divisional Hospital.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata and St. Xavier's University Kolkata Alumni Association have undertaken a number of initiatives in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the last few months. A 40- bed Safe-Home was setup inside the University campus during the peak of the 2nd wave of COVID-19 outbreak. SXUKAA has been involved in organising five COVID Vaccination drives covering over 1000 doses, including a rural vaccination drive organised in Gurap Village, Hooghly district.

SXUKAA Observes Philanthropy Day

St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association (SXUKAA) celebrated the birthday of its President Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ on Thursday, 26thAugust, 2021 as “Philanthropy Day”.

Rev. Fr. President was felicitated by members of SXUKAA and SXUKAA. On this occasion, alumni recommitted themselves for the cause of social welfare.

On this auspicious day, Fr. President handed over a cheque for the eye operation of Mrs. Laxmi Bag, a 78 year old lady who is in the urgent need of the same. Mrs. Bag is a roadside tea-seller, who was dispossed of her own house by her sons who do not look after her.

COVID-19 Vaccination Drive

The camp was supported by the District Administration of North 24 Parganas, and Shri Sumit Gupta, IAS, Hon'ble District Magistrate, North 24 Parganas graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. 220 beneficiaries, including Jesuit Fathers, university staff, security personnel and construction workers received their jabs in the drive.

COVID Care Centre

In response to the 2nd wave of COVID-19, St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata had setup a 40 Bed Covid Care Centre (Safe Home) in the University Campus. The safe home was setup with medical support from the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. The initiative was supported by SXUKAA.

The book comprises of 75 inspirational stories, collected and annotated by Fr. Felix Raj, which were taken from different mythological and religious faiths. Introducing the book, Father Felix Raj said, “The stories will inspire every individual in shaping his or her life to become a better human being. These stories are relevant in facing challenges in day to day life”.

In the Inaugural address Dr. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay said that in the present education system, quality education including value education has become very important along with its proliferation. The foreword to the book is written by Dr. Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University. The book was released on the occasion of the feast day of St. Francis Xavier.

Father Felix Raj, in his introductory address also said that every story he has compiled in this book is a wave from the sea of his heart to embrace every reader so that they are touched and transformed. He further said, “we are drawn to stories because they are the index of our mind. They are universal in meaning and purpose. They help us to share our varied emotions – joys and sorrows that design the bouquet of life. They each come with a message and influence our thought processes and decisions. They make us human and teach us wisdom. They shape our perspectives. Everyone is a story, and every story belongs to someone. Stories take us on a journey of self-discovery and transformation”.

The book is published by St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association.

Father welcomed all the members and called it an historical occasion. He also placed on record his gratitude to all the members and well-wishers, particularly the Alumni of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, who were instrumental in formation of the Association. He said that the Alumni/ae are always welcome to the University and should always feel a sense of belonging towards their alma mater.

The members discussed and deliberated on various issues. The Secretary’s Report and the Audited Accounts of the Association for the year 2019-20 were approved. Based on the nominations received, Rev. Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ extended a warm welcome to all the participants and called it a red-letter day as this was the first program organized by St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association. He placed on record his gratitude to all those involved in the formation of the Alumni Association and the organization of the Webinar. Rev. Fr. Felix Raj went on to speak about the experience of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata during the lockdown due to the Corona-virus outbreak and how the University was trying its best to ensure the continuity of the teaching-learning process even though there have been no physical classes in the last five months. Father said how the ‘life’ of the campus is missing due to the absence of students in the campus.

Dr. Purnendu Roy spoke about the ‘Health and Wellness Challenges in the new normal.’ He said that we should not just hope for ‘normalcy’ to return but aim for a situation ‘better than normal.’ He said that we should look upon Corona-virus as a challenge and said that small steps taken by us can go a long way in protecting us. He said that simple practices like frequent hand washing, avoiding putting our hands on our face and wearing face masks properly can prevent the infection. He also called upon everyone to stand by the needy and the vulnerable during this tough time.

Shri Suparno Moitra spoke about the “Economic & Administrative Challenges in the new normal.” He specifically pointed out the various problems that are being faced by the various sections of the society and his recommendations regarding the same. He spoke about the Key Economic Indicators of the country and the likely trends. In a structured presentation, he pointed out the specific problems being faced by Faculty Members, Students and Administrators of educational institutions in the present period and how they can overcome them.

The entire session was moderated by Mr. Mario Martin Louis, Placement & Training Officer of St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, who also conducted a brief Interactive Session after all the speakers had presented their views. Mr. Vatsal Chirimar, Treasurer, St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association proposed the Vote of Thanks.

1ST MEETING OF THE MEMBERS

The first meeting of the members of St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association was convened on 16thFebruary, 2020 by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, SJ, President, SXUKAA. Rev. Fr. A delegation led by Rev. Fr. John Felix Raj, represented St. Xavier’s University Kolkata Alumni Association at the 9th JAAI National Congress held at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli between 17th – 19thJanuary, 2020.
